Over 200,000 women in the United States are diagnosed with breast cancer every year.  One Lowcountry doctor uses a preventative method that she says will ward off breast cancer.

“It’s a foundation that helps women and men. It’s a healthy way of living,” said Dr. Mickey Barber.

Barber’s method involves a strict regimen of diet, exercise, meditation and hormonal supplements. Patients undergo a series of blood work, then meet with Barber to discuss stress levels, dietary history, and exercise habits.

“Stress is one of the leading factors that can cause cancer,” Barber said.

She recommends her patients meditate 15 minutes every day to reduce stress. A recent study out of Europe said women who have had four or more life stressors over a two year span increase their chances for developing breast cancer.

“It can be divorce, death, loss of a job, anything that affects your life negatively,” Barber said.

Her diet plan includes lots of leafy greens such as kale and broccoli, which contain a compound that prevents breast cancer. She recommends exercising at least four to five times a week.  She also tells her patients to cut out or reduce alcohol intake.

“It’s proven that drinking two or more alcoholic beverages a day can greatly increase your chances for breast cancer,” Barber said.
